Student Council
Unioto High School Student Council
Dating back to the inception of the Union-Scioto High School (Unioto), seventy seven years ago in 1938, the Student Council was formed. Perhaps the oldest student service club/organization, the high school student council has evolved over the years. In modern recent history the student council exists as a student government organization that has several key components.
The members/candidates run in the spring by circulating petitions with twenty five signatures of peers in their class along with the endorsement of one staff member. An election is held and four members of each class are elected to serve the coming year. Once elected, officers are selected from within the newly elected members for President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Publicity Chairperson. The primary purpose of the Council is to prepare, organize and serve the student body during several key events throughout the year and as issues present themselves. Monthly meetings are held before or after school and with special meetings as necessary in order to carry out the planning and presentation of the events.
The key roles of the Student Council are:
Homecoming - Theme, King and Court Selection, PreGame festivities, Dance Decorating, DJ, Chaperones, Refreshments and cleanup
Fall Senior/Parents Night Festivities for Fall Athletics, Band and Cheerleading recognition at final home football game.
Winter Senior/Parents Night Festivities for Winter Athletics, Pep Band and Cheerleading recognition at final home boys basketball game.
Student Council Scholarship Program - offering three one thousand dollar scholarships with an application process, selection and presentation at Senior Awards night.
Student/Staff Bereavement responsibilities - provides the monetary and moral support on behalf of the student body in regard to the loss of loved ones for staff, students and alumni when called upon.
Provide at minimum one Community Service project - traditionally the Council provides can food or monetary support to the Ross County Good Samaritan Food Bank during the Holidays.
In the past, the Student Council has held winter dances and participated in Student Council Exchanges with rival schools in the area in order to gain understanding of the culture and climate found in other area schools.
The Student Council has also participated in assisting the School Food Service/Cafeteria staff in reviewing changes and options for offerings in the cafeteria.
The Student Council has provided monetary assistance in providing and ensuring the memory of passing faculty be memorialized in the dedication of trees and memorials around the campus.
